The Workers’ Defence Committee (KOR) was founded in 1976 in Poland. Its primal objective was to help people persecuted by the state. A year later it was transformed into the Committee for the Social Self-Defence ‘KOR’, which took up the continuous struggle for civil rights. Several hundred activists of the dissent movement created a parallel world in which the germs of civic society emerged – uncensored press and publishing houses, independent groups of students and farmers, the Flying University and free trade unions.

Anna Wasa (1568–1625) war die Tochter des schwedischen Königs Johann III. und der polnischen Prinzessin Katarina Jagellonica. Sie wurde katholisch erzogen, konvertierte jedoch bereits 1583 zum Protestantismus und blieb bis an ihr Lebensende eine glühende Lutheranerin. Sie war eine umfassend gebildete und wissenschaftlich interssierte Frau, die in der Literatur auch „Königin der polnischen Botanik“ genannt wird. Als ihr Bruder zum König Sigismund III. von Polen wurde, begleitete sie ihn dorthin und starb ledig.

Adam Mickiewicz (1798 – 1855) was the greatest Polish Romantic poet, and one of the great intellectual and literary figures of the first half of the 19th century in Europe. Through his verses, as well as his efforts as a scholar, lecturer, political activist and literary celebrity, he sought to bridge the gap between the Slavic nations and the culture of Western Europe. This selection of 27 poems focuses on the poems within Mickiewicz’s oeuvre which might be described as metaphysical.

This edited collection comprises twelve original research papers scrutinizing the historical dimensions of prostitution across 19th and 20th century Central, South, and East-Central Europe. Each contribution employs distinct methodological perspectives and diverse sources. Notably, this volume includes pioneering articles delineating nearly uncharted terrains in the history of prostitution in Europe, especially socialist Eastern European countries.
