International conference organised under the European University Institute Widening Europe Programme (WEP), in collaboration with the Warsaw Centre for Global History (Faculty of History, University of Warsaw), the Faculty of Culture and Arts (University of Warsaw), the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnology (Polish Academy of Sciences), and the Centre for Historical Research in Berlin (Polish Academy of Sciences).
The conference will explore Central and Eastern Europe as an integral part of the early modern world, foregrounding its global connections, circulations, and entanglements from the 16th to the 18th centuries. Challenging the region’s persistent marginalisation in global historical scholarship, the conference brings together researchers from various disciplines and countries to examine how Central and Eastern European states and communities participated in, and were shaped by, continental-spanning exchange processes. The three-day conference will open with a keynote lecture by Tomasz Grusiecki (Queen’s University, Kingston, Canada), entitled ‘The Last Aurochs: A Global History of Extinction before Extinction.’
