Die in diesem Band versammelten Texte wurden während des Panels „The Commonwealth of Poland – new views on the common Polish-Ukrainian history of the early modern period” auf dem internationalen Kongress „Rethinking Ukraine and Europe: New Challenges for Historians“ (15. bis 17. September 2023) in Vilnius vorgetragen. Das Panel wurde vom Institut für Litauische Geschichte in Vilnius und dem CBH PAN organisiert. Die Lektüre dieser Texte ermöglicht es uns, die Geschichte des Polnisch-Litauischen Unionsstaats in der Frühen Neuzeit aus einer anderen Perspektive zu betrachten und über das stereotype Bild der polnisch-ukrainischen Beziehungen hinauszugehen, das oft auf die Konflikte zwischen Polen und Kosaken reduziert wird. Die vier Texte ukrainischer Autorinnen und Autoren und eines polnischen Autors, die hier aufgenommen wurden, zeigen auch die Dilemmata der verschiedenen Historiographien von Staaten, die zum kulturellen Erbe des ehemaligen Polen-Litauen zählen.

Zebrane w niniejszym tomie teksty zostały wygłoszone podczas sesji „Річ Посполита — нові погляди на спільну польсько-українську історію ранньомодерного періоду. Rzeczpospolita — Nowe spojrzenia na wspólną polsko-ukraińską historię wczesnej epoki nowożytnej”, zorganizowanej przez Instytut Historii Litwy w Wilnie i Centrum Badań Historycznych PAN w Berlinie podczas międzynarodowego kongresu „Rethinking Ukraine and Europe: New Challenges for Historians”, który odbył się w Wilnie w dniach 15 –17.09.2023. Ich lektura pozwala spojrzeć na dzieje Rzeczypospolitej
w epoce nowożytnej z innego punktu widzenia, wychodząc poza stereotypowy obraz relacji polsko-ukraińskich, często redukowany do konfliktów polsko-kozackich. Cztery zamieszczone tutaj teksty autorów ukraińskich i jeden polskiego ukazują dylematy, czy też pułapki, w które wpada częstokroć historiografia białoruska, litewska, polska i ukraińska, czyli państw będących spadkobiercami dziedzictwa kulturowego dawnej Rzeczypospolitej.

The texts collected in this volume were delivered during the session “The Commonwealth of Poland — new views on the common Polish-Ukrainian history of the early modern period”, organized by the Institute of Lithuanian History in Vilnius and the Centre for Historical Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Berlin during the international congress “Rethinking Ukraine and Europe: New Challenges for Historians”, which took place in Vilnius on 15 –17 September 2023. Reading them allows us to look at the his tory of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the modern era from a different perspective, going beyond the stereotypical image of Polish-Ukrainian relations, often reduced to Polish-Cossack conflicts. The four texts by Ukrainian authors and one Polish author included here also show the dilemmas of various historiographies of states that are heirs to the cultural heritage of the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.
